The most common drill accessory is drill bits, of which there are a number of different types, each one is designed to be used for particular applications and for different methods of operation. You can find a variety of drill bits at RS Components.

Users should be aware that using a drill bit that exceeds their drill’s maximum drilling capacities is not recommended, as this can result in the tool suffering permanent damage.

Drill bit types include brad point bits, cobalt HSS bits, high-speed steel bits, masonry bits, multi-purpose bits, reduced shank HSS bits and titanium nitrate bits.

Brad Point Bits

These drill bits feature a brad point tip (also sometimes called a W point tip) that enables the drill’s outer cutting edges to cut the diameter of a hole prior to the breaking through of the center. This means that the bit does not grab and the result is an extremely clean hole.

This makes this bit ideal for drilling wood and certain plastics and for tasks such as dowelling. Brad point bits are sometimes packaged along with depth stops, small rubber rings that can fit around bits and enable the user to select the depth they want to drill to.

Cobalt HSS Bits

Highly resistant to abrasion and high temperatures, these precision ground bits come from solid cobalt alloyed high-speed steel and are used for the drilling of materials such as stainless steel as well as other high tensile steels.

High Speed Steel Bits

Sometimes referred to also as twist drill bits, HSS bits are the most common drill bit type and are perfect for use for the normal drilling of metal, plastics and wood. HSS bits normally come with a cylindrical shank, though some may have been altered to include a ¼ inch hex shank.

HSS Rivet Bits

These drill bits, intended for use drilling holes for rivets, usually feature flutes on either end, enabling one drill bit to drill twice the number of holes. They are designed to create shallow holes in thin metal.

Masonry Bits

Hammer drills make use of these bits to drill into the likes of stone, concrete and bricks when on hammer mode. Some masonry drill bits of professional quality also come with a hexagonal shank in place of a cylindrical shank in order to prevent bits slipping within the chuck when substantial loads are being experienced by the drill. They may also come with a percussion ground carbide tip.

Multi-Purpose Bits

Multi-purpose bits can usually be used in both hammer and rotary modes. These bits can drill almost every material type including ceramic tiles, masonry, and metal, plastic and wood.

Reduced Shank HSS Bits

These drill bits can create a much bigger hole than normal, and are able to drill through metal, plastics and wood.

Titanium Nitride HSS Bits

Titanium nitride coating can extend the cutting life of Titanium Nitride HSS Bits considerably when used in the correct manner, because it reduces the build-up of heat and increases the lubricity of the bit.

Other types of drill bits include spade bits, auger bits, forstner bits, countersink bits, diamond bits, special direct system bits, step drill bits, plug cutting bits, saw bits and spear point bits.
