John Hanke is the CEO of Niantic, the company behind the wildly popular Pokemon GO mobile game. In an interview with Fast Company, Hanke talked about Niantic’s vision for the metaverse and how the metaverse could become a dystopian nightmare.

“I think the thing that’s really scary about the metaverse is the potential for it to be a surveillance state,” said Hanke. “I think that’s the big risk. You could have a situation where, if you’re not careful, all of your behavior is being monitored and tracked and that data is being used to manipulate you.”

Hanke went on to say that Niantic is working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen. “We’re trying to build a platform that gives people agency and control over their own data,” he said. “I think that’s the key thing.”

So there you have it. The CEO of Niantic is well aware of the potential risks of the metaverse, but he and his company are working hard to make sure that those risks don’t become reality. Let’s just hope they succeed.

What do you think? Are you worried about the potential for a surveillance state in the metaverse? Let us know in the comments.

When asked about the possibility of the metaverse becoming a dystopian nightmare, Hanke said:

“I think it’s important to remember that the metaverse is still very much in its early stages, and so it’s hard to say exactly how it will evolve. There are definitely some potential pitfalls, but there are also a lot of potential benefits. I think it’s important to keep an open mind and see how things develop.”

Hanke went on to discuss some of the potential benefits of the metaverse, such as increased connection and understanding between people from different cultures. He also spoke about some of the challenges that need to be overcome in order for the metaverse to reach its full potentials, such as ensuring that everyone has access to the same level of technology and resources.
