Need to free up space on your Mac? Is your Mac slowing down due to junk files? Are you having trouble cleaning the junk files? We have the solution for you. There comes a time to clean junk from Mac due to certain reasons like the system becoming slow or it takes up a lot of space which we could use to store important data. We often come across situations as such in our day-to-day life. The junks on our Mac usually create glitches and errors in our system sometimes resulting in deleting important files mistakenly.

What are junk files on a Mac?

Junks are temporary files in our system such as residual files, cache, and viruses, etc. They are created in our systems after we complete the process of deleting files and after the installations of applications. These files are useful for the smooth functioning of the system But, after some time, they become a problem since they don’t get deleted automatically and are no longer needed in our system. This is how they become junk files.

Types of junk files

Cache files: These are temporary app files that are stored on your Mac. The purpose of the cache files is to speed up the performance of the Mac. Cache data is necessary for using a wired internet connection on a Mac.

System log files: It is stored deep inside its memory in every Mac. They are plain text files not to take up a lot of space. The Mac saves and stores these files to diagnose errors and problems with macOS when they occur.

Log files: When a Mac becomes old, it has a lot of user logs. Whenever an app crashes, we are asked to submit a big report. Our systems gather the user logs and include them in the report. The use files do not contain information about our activity.

Language file: In your Mac, we can set the languages we prefer for our app. Once, the language of our preference is added we can delete the other language files. These files are stored inside the application packages. Many users usually do not have an idea about its existence.

Xcode Junk: Using Xcode gets tons of our disk space hogged with old cache and other junk that it consumes. It may not come to our notice. Until it affects our Mac. To remove Xcode junk, it is required to go over all the libraries. To perform this activity, here are the necessary steps:

~/Library/ Developer/Xcode/DerivedDat

~/Library/Developer/Xcode/Archives ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/i0S DeviceSupport

~/Library/Developer/CoreSimulator

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.dt.Xcode

~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

iTunes Broken Downloads: Incomplete downloads can store up a lot of space on your Mac. Pilling up such files makes the system slower.

The trash in your Mac: Cleaning up an empty Trash folder adds to better performance of the internal and external volume.

Is there a need to delete junk on a Mac?

Junk files are quite harmless on their own, but they become a problem if they get accumulated at a large quantity. It occupies a lot of space on the hard drive of the system. Some junk remains even after running up a clean-up. Another issue is that it makes the system slow. The more the junks are accumulated the more the system gets slow. It will also get slow while starting too. Deleting it will make the system faster as well as free up space to store more important files. You can delete junk on a Mac by simply following these steps:

  • First, open Finder.
  • Click the Go menu< select Go to folder.
  • Then, enter the /var/log in the field< then, select Go.
  • There, all the systems log files will be visible< then, select the file that you want to delete and drag them to the Bin.

Junks on a Mac are also found in your Mail. If you mark certain mail as junk, mail can filter junk mail from your inbox.

Tip: Put a junk mail filter on if you do not like spam. To do it, Select Mail> Preferences> select Junk Mail< verify “Enable junk mail filtering”

Junk files tend to hurt the Mac systems in a worse way than Windows. Recently the company has started to use SSD in storage units which was HDD before. Now this has significantly improved the performance of the system but it has also increased the overall cost. In order to fight that the company started putting a low storage SSD which gets filled easily. So actively eliminating junk from the system becomes really important especially when you are working with big files and cannot afford to lose time.

To avoid this situation I would suggest you to get a third party junk cleaning utility tool that can effectively detect any such files in and around your system, get rid of them and also not damage anything of importance. Manually doing this work is also possible but here are two issues with that.

  1. You will need to have specialized knowledge in computers to find all such files from the depth. These files are found in different locations and even if you know the location, not every file can be deleted. You may mistakenly delete any system file and can render your system useless.
  2. The second issue is of time. You will have to spend at least an hour every time to decide to clean it out.
